Women’s Self Defense in Walla Walla

By the little dojo | November 14, 2009

We are asked often about women’s self defense classes.  It is our opinion that the best bet is to actually learn to defend yourself with out really any regard to gender.  There are some differences in the defensive needs of women and some similarities.  The best approach to take for learning self defense for men or women however is to enroll in a class that teaches people to develop speed, power, and skills that will work for them.  Then take modular classes that would address specific interests or concerns that they might have as an individual.

Some people are naturally powerful and fast so learning to punch with power is not really an issue as just punching is plenty effective, other people are not as strong, fast or have as long of a reach so learning good body dynamics is critical for getting a strong fast strike.  It is all about intelligent training rather you are a man or a woman.

Many times I have seen situations in Martial Arts Classes or in Self Defense seminars where women are treated differently than men, this can be a good thing in terms of respect for differences but a bad thing in terms of instruction.  People who are lighter or not as tall will need different strategies to get power or incorporate movement to escape or attack to make up for these differences.  Learning torque, leverage, and movement can be more critical, to success.

It should not be assumed that because a school teaches Karate, or Kung Fu, or MMA that they have an appreciation for really teaching functional skill sets for every individual.  You will want to learn fro someone who has the background and ability to tailor a program for each individual.  Training in a class environment  gives people a background and of structural skills to work from then taking special courses that meet specific needs.  Fook Yueng Chuan is a method of Gung Fu or Wushu that has been around with various names for over 3000 years it has been around for so long because it works for self defense and additionally has many health benefits.  Grand Master Fook Yueng is not a large man, at 100 pounds and 5 ft. tall he is able to functionally defend himself against most anyone.  That is translated into the skills in the method that use techniques that a small person can use to great effect even if someone is 6 foot 6 he or she will just be that much more effective.

The Fook Yueng Chuan Basic Combat System is a perfect personal protection method that is functional for men and women.  We offer Women’s self defense programs that offer a comfortable learning environment while giving first class effective methods for protecting one’s self and family.  The classes are empowering physically and mentally.  I encourage everyone to take a functional class from people who teach legitimate effective methods and to get lessons for their, mothers, daughters, nieces and grand mothers.

The classes are active, fun and informative, covering every aspect of personal safety that one might face.  For information contact stevesmith@thelittledojo.com.  Classes are available at our location or at your organization.

Other Schools teaching the Fook Yueng Chuan Basic Combat System include. Beginners Mind School, True Spirit Martial Arts, Yuen’s Family Martial Arts Centers, Inner Warrior Martial Arts, and The Chinese Boxing Association in Geneva.

Choosing a school that teaches true skill can really make the difference when you need a difference made.

Thank you Adam. The same can be said for the training at Pragmatic Martial Arts.

Excellent training and a commitment to real training for real results rather than “reality based” martial arts is good for everyone.
