Principles / Techniques
By the little dojo | March 7, 2006
Techniques are the “Finger Pointing at the Moon”. A problem that occurs with the way many of us study and practice the Martial Arts of any “Style” is that we get so caught up in perfecting the technique that we forget or never look for the Principle it is trying to teach.
Often we view techniques as something we do, that we do to some one else, not with someone else. In Fook Yueng and Shoshin Ryu Karate Jitsu the question is; what does my partner need in order to fall this way or that way kind of like always looking at it from his or her point of view, empathy. If we try to impose our way/technique on them it takes alot of force and is rarely successful, and probably resented, for many reasons it is usually poorly timed with where they are now as compared to where they were when you started to move.
One way to improve is to look at the body and how it is put together, where are the pivots and hinges what are the ways it moves and reacts to stimulus, then go back look at the techniques with that in mind. Doing this simple exercise over and over and looking at the techniques with the end in mind will help us move down the finger and to the moon. This simple process will help with developing transcendence in our own Martial Art. That process applied over and over is key.

I just reviewed the TV Program Go Warrior starring Roland Osborne it is both informative and fun to watch. There are segments on Aikido, Russian Martial Arts, Korea and Brazilian Jujitsu (Gracie Academy). All the shows are fun to watch and Roland does a great job of making them informational fun and accessable for every level of student. Please write to the discovery channel and express your interest in them airing the episodes. They are great! Roland Osborne has just introduced a very good program called the Millenium Curriculum that we have started to impliment for our kids and teen classes at Premier Martial Arts.
